In this great post about business goal planning I talked about “your number”. Making sure that you have your monetary business goal nailed down for a certain period of time. I have a specific income level that I want to reach by the end of January 2009. I think it is mandatory that everyone do this exercise to nail down your small business goals.
Now that you have a specific business goal and you are committed to achieving it, I want to ask you a tough question:
Have you also committed to a personal goal?
What are you willing to sacrifice to achieve your business goal?
Don’t we start our businesses so that we can have more control over our lives and spend more time doing the things that we enjoy doing?
I have lived the fast paced, sacrifice all, life of an entrepreneur when I built myself a multi-million dollar internet business. I also sacrificed 20 hours a day, seven days a week to achieve this. I went on for months on end.
I eventually had to take a break and slow down for months. When I finally decided that family, friends and myself were more important than any business venture, I went back to corporate America so that I could try to regain everything that I gave up as I built and grew my business.
Now, I am building my online business the right way. I have determined that nothing is going to stop me from living my ideal life.
After determining my ideal life (a blend of what I dream of my personal life and my business life looking like), I broke out what my personal life would look like, what my business life would look like (both now and in the future) and what my life as an entrepreneur would look like.
I lived a crazy life of sacrificing now for the good of my future. But I was not happy in the now and I sacrificed a lot to
have a thriving internet business. I lost tons of time with friends and family and refuse to do it again.
My goals are clear, what I want out of life is clear and my commitment to my personal life is strong. Yes I have goals, but they are reasonable goals and do not spread me too thin. I am currently on a 90 day burst to kickoff the efforts of my new business.
After the initial 90 days I will slow down and develop a few new income streams. And most important of all, I created a plan and that puts me 100% incontrol of what I do every single day. The plan helps me feel more secure and gives me the ability to know my business will be there if I have some more important things to tend to at the time.
