I recently had a pretty substantial “ah-ha” moment. I was caught up in information overload. I was trying to get my first book completed and ready to sell online. No goal setting being practiced at all! The more I worked, the less I got done. Sound familiar?
I think that this is something that a lot of us in the internet marketing world fall prey to. There is so much going on around us and every click of the mouse can lead us down another path. It had to end and it had to end quickly if I was ever going to achieve my dreams.
I didn’t even realize that working towards a smart goal was even an issue. I heard two “gurus” talk about it within weeks of each other. Their message was simple: “You have to be working towards clearly defined goals if you are going to get anywhere in this business.” Business goal, goal setting and goal planning is priceless to these guys.
Think about it. Do you have a clearly defined goal for your business? Do you have a clearly defined goal for your personal life? For what you want to accomplish today? This week? This year?
I am not talking about task setting either. I am talking about a measurable, realistic goal that you can achieve. For your business I suggest beginning with something as simple as “By the end of 2009 I will be making $XXX,XXX dollars per month from my business.” Have you thought about your business like this? Have you created focused road maps that can nearly guarantee that you will achieve your goal? What drives your motivation? Notice that the goal is in present tense. You have to believe it, believe in yourself and live as if you have already achieved your goals. Your mindset and vision is going to take you a long way in your mission to achieving your life dreams! Knowing where you want to end up, what your ideal life looks like is key to goal setting.
I don’t know about you, but it took me nearly a week to come up with a realistic goal. It also took the realization that in order for me to achieve this goal I had to buckle down, hone my time management skills, get out from under all of the information attacking me each day and putting my nose to the grindstone to get it done. And to be honest, I don’t think I have really thought about my ideal life. Sure I dream but I never envisioned what would my ideal life would look like, beginning to end.
I suggest spending some time thinking about this, writing it down and zeroing in on what’s really important to you. Some questions to consider when it comes to goal setting would be:
How will you spend your days?
How will you pay it forward?
How will you give back to those around you?
What does your company look like?
What does it stand for?
What do you stand for?
What are you best at?
What do people come to you for advice for?
How much will you make in one month?
What are your strengths? Your weaknesses?
There are some pretty daunting questions to tackle here. As you think about these, actually envision yourself going through the motions. Live a day of your future life right now in your head. Notice every detail. Write it down. Now you have something to work towards.
Now you know where you are going!
